Strengthening Mind and Body
The Brain Gym expands what’s possible in rehabilitation and wellness
At Providence St. Jude Centers for Rehabilitation
and Wellness, a new and innovative space is helping patients strengthen not only their bodies but also
their minds. The Brain Gym is transforming how rehabilitation and wellness services support cognitive health across the community.
Made possible through the generosity of the John H. Grace Foundation Rehab & Wellness Fund, the Brain Gym reflects a powerful investment in the future of patient care, one that is already making a meaningful difference.
Smarter approach to cognitive fitness
Designed around an advanced approach known as
dual tasking, the Brain Gym combines cognitive, cardiovascular and neuromotor exercises into a single, integrated experience. Participants engage both mind and body simultaneously, a method shown to improve memory, focus, processing speed and executive function when practiced consistently.
The program is highly adaptable, allowing exercises to be tailored to each individual’s needs. Many activities are also gamified, introducing a social and engaging element that encourages participation, builds confidence and supports overall brain health.
Growing in impact and possibility
In its first year, the impact was both immediate and far-reaching. Elements of the Brain Gym have already been incorporated into a variety of existing programs, including cancer wellness, Parkinson’s, balance and fall risk, and neuro gym offerings. It also plays a central role in early intervention efforts, such as the Parkinson’s Empowerment program.
Just as importantly, the Brain Gym is expanding access to preventive care. Plans are underway to introduce cohort-based fitness programs for seniors focused on maintaining cognitive health, as well as pilot programs for individuals with early-stage cognitive impairment to help slow disease progression.
This forward-looking approach reflects a broader vision: integrating cognitive fitness into rehabilitation and wellness care for patients at every stage of life.
