Humble Champion
David Batterman hopes to encourage others in their times of need
David Batterman’s journey with Providence St. Jude began in 1996 with lifesaving six-way bypass surgery. This marked the start of a profound connection that has spanned decades and inspired his significant contributions to cardiac and cancer services at the medical center.
A veteran of the Army Reserves, David spent a substantial part of his career at Southern California Edison, where he worked from 1970 until his retirement in 2006. After retiring, he returned as a consultant, working as an Edison inspector for contractors.
David’s late wife, Linda, was also treated at Providence St. Jude. Her battle with cancer deeply influenced his decision to support the medical center’s cancer services. “It’s honoring warriors like her that are coming after her, who are having to fight the same battle,” David reflects. His philanthropy is not only a tribute to Linda but also his way of supporting other families facing similar challenges.
Despite his substantial contributions, David remains incredibly humble and reluctant to seek recognition. “I hope that by sharing my experiences, I can help others feel less alone and realize that there are people in the community who care about their struggles.”
David’s story is indeed an inspiration, showing that behind every gift is a heart that cares deeply, even for those he will never meet. David’s dedication and his willingness to share his journey provide a powerful reminder that each act of kindness and support helps build a stronger, more compassionate community.
